Dirk Hanlon: 29,000 jobs added in September, layoffs at a four-year low. Gus: nobody's getting fired, I'm unfireable! Dot: Father, they also aren't hiring; low hire, low fire. The economy grew (the Atlanta Fed tracks 3.7% for the third quarter), the jobs didn't. Skip: so I can't get fired from a job I can't get. Gus: then I'll stay unfireable right here.
September's 29,000 new jobs came in an economy that is growing but not hiring: layoffs are at their lowest rate in four years and weekly jobless claims are low, while growth was revised up to 2.5% and 2.2% in the first two quarters and the Atlanta Fed tracks the third at 3.7%; one economist says August's jump was only a rebound from weak June and July, and another that Americans are frustrated by the lack of opportunities.
