Did You Read It? Tonight, the Edina case from chapter fifteen of Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker. A Minnesota town moved its teenagers' school bell from 7:25 to 8:30; the teens slept forty-three minutes more, and top verbal SAT scores went from 605 to 761, 212 points with math. Gary guesses six to nine. Marcie knows Teton County, Wyoming: an 8:55 bell and 70 percent fewer teen crashes. The author admits Edina is contested.
The Edina case in chapter 15 of Why We Sleep: the Minnesota township moved its teenagers' school start from 7:25 to 8:30 a.m., the teens reported forty-three minutes more sleep, and among top students the average verbal SAT rose from 605 to 761 and math from 683 to 739, which the author adds up to 212 points; he concedes the case is contested and points to larger studies, and to Teton County, Wyoming, where a shift to an 8:55 bell went with 70 percent fewer crashes among drivers aged sixteen to eighteen.
