Fence Some Off

Oct 15, 2026 · 0:31

This year, machines solved more than one hundred old problems of mathematics. Aki: and the mathematicians? Old Tane: twenty-seven Fields medallists signed a declaration that solving is not the goal; small problems train the young. Lord Ozen: solve them all, faster! Aki: fence some off, like parks, as one medallist has suggested.

One of the 27 Fields medallists objecting to AI's assault on mathematics has suggested fencing some problems off from automated solvers, as if they were natural parks, because the smaller, easier problems are how young mathematicians learn their craft; even OpenAI held back its hundred-plus solutions until it could work out how to prepare the field for them.
