Today's Word Is Tenure

Oct 14, 2026 · 0:31

Today's word is tenure: how long you keep one job. A famous investor says careers for life are gone. Bitsy: is that true? Professor Wobble: partly! Men near sixty once stayed 15.3 years; now it's 9.6. Mort: typical worker? 4.1 years, up from 3.5. Brought to you by the word tenure.

BlackRock's Larry Fink says America lost its bedrock when careers for life gave way to job-hopping, but the data only partly agrees: the median worker has been with their employer 4.1 years, up from 3.5 in 1983, while men aged 55 to 64 have seen their median tenure fall from 15.3 years to 9.6.
