Today's word is concentration: when a few carry the many. Professor Wobble: ten companies give two thirds of the S&P 500's expected profit growth, by Citadel's count. Bitsy: how much without them? 27% becomes about 11%. Mort: the smallest 300 companies? About 5%. Brought to you by the number eleven.
Beneath the 36% figure sits a steeper one: by Citadel Securities' count the ten biggest contributors supply roughly two-thirds of the S&P 500's expected third-quarter earnings growth, without them the forecast 27% rise shrinks to about 11%, and the smallest 300 companies in the index are expected to grow earnings only about 5%; roughly 47% of the index by weight reports between October 28 and November 3.
