Dirk Hanlon: the oldest cars on the road are the sedans, at about 14.1 years. Gus: our sedan is a classic, classics appreciate! Dot: Father, sedans are old because buyers switched to SUVs and pickups and nobody traded the old ones in; pricier cars and higher loan rates stretched the whole fleet from 10.4 years in 2008 to 13. Gus: it's not old, it's durable, like me.

America's oldest vehicles are its sedans: passenger cars average about 14.1 years, older than the SUVs and pickups buyers switched to, because the old sedans stayed on the road while new buying moved to trucks; the whole fleet has aged from 10.4 years in 2008 to 13, pushed by sharply higher new-car prices, higher loan rates and cars that last longer.
