The Car Business Splits

Oct 15, 2026 · 0:28

The city of Ledgerville! Where cars average thirteen years old. Mayor Pennywhistle: the car business is doomed! Dash: not doomed, split; garages win on cars six to fourteen years old, the industry's repair sweet spot. Pop: a hundred and ten million cars, 38% of the fleet, 40% by 2028! Zap: too old, and it's scrapped, not fixed. And so, once again, carmakers wait and garages win.

The thirteen-year-old American car fleet is splitting the car business in two: more than 110 million vehicles are in the six-to-fourteen-year 'sweet spot' where parts and repair spending concentrates, about 38% of the fleet and heading for 40% by 2028, so parts makers and garages gain what carmakers lose to delayed replacement, though cars too far past their prime get scrapped rather than fixed.
