The Warning Is the Pitch

Oct 15, 2026 · 0:30

The city of Ledgerville! Where Anthropic pitched investors sixteen point eight billion in quarterly revenue, up 45%, and safety. Mayor Pennywhistle: a ten percent chance the robots end us! Dash: over ten percent, said one of its researchers in September. Pop: the firm says it blocked attempts to misuse its model toward bioweapons. Zap: the president says it won't happen. Rival OpenAI says it won't list this year. And so, once again, the warning is the pitch.

Anthropic's pitch to investors came with its own warning label: alongside revenue up 45% to $16.8 billion, it emphasised safety at its investor event, after one of its researchers said in September there was a greater than 10% chance AI could kill all humans within a decade and the company said it had disrupted attempts to use its model toward biological weapons; the president says researchers are bringing up things that won't happen, and rival OpenAI's chief says it will not go public this year while it addresses such concerns.
