Fifty Bucks a Career

Oct 15, 2026 · 0:33

Tommy: eleven million people need new careers by 2035, a McKinsey report says. Dougie: I'll sell careers, fifty bucks each. Scarf: forty million new jobs, too. Town hall: ban robots! Abe: Mayor, where do they go? Mayor Dithers: elsewhere. Tommy learned something today: more jobs come (40 million) than go (demand for 36 million cut), 25 million stay put, but eleven million still switch, and only one in seven has an easy path; almost 45% face an unpaved one. Dougie: fifty bucks, I'll pave it.

McKinsey's report says automation could cut demand for 36 million jobs' worth of work by 2035 while the economy creates more than 40 million new jobs; 25 million affected workers can stay put, but about 11 million must change occupation entirely, and only one in seven of them has a direct path to a new job.

unusual_whales post: Up to 11 million Americans may need entirely new careers by 2035. That's about 6.5% of the labor force, forced to switch occupations because of AI and automation, per a new McKinsey report. Automation could wipe out demand for 36 million jobs.
