Today's Word Is Core

Oct 16, 2026 · 0:31

Today's word is core. Professor Wobble: wholesale prices rose six point three percent in a year. Bitsy: why core? Professor Wobble: without food and energy, still up five percent. Bitsy: five, up from four point six! Professor Wobble: electricity, vegetables, shipping and air fares all rose. Mort: eggs fell thirty-nine point seven percent; nobody posts that. Brought to you by the number five.

Take gasoline out of September's wholesale price jump and prices were still rising: core producer prices excluding food and energy rose 0.7% in the month and 5% over the year, up from 4.6% in August, with electricity, vegetables, shipping and air fares dearer; goods prices rose 2.6%, the most since that series began in 2009, while egg prices fell 39.7% and fuel retailers' margins fell 30.3%.
