Oct 16, 2026 · 0:29

Today's word is referendum. Professor Wobble: Alberta votes Monday on whether to start the process of leaving Canada; polls say fewer than one in four Albertans want to go. Bitsy: why vote then? Professor Wobble: around three hundred thousand signed a petition asking for it. Mort: Carney says outsiders want to break Canada; he didn't name them. Brought to you by one in four.

Alberta votes on Monday, October 19, not on independence itself but on whether to start the legal process toward a separation referendum; Prime Minister Mark Carney told a Calgary rally that a vote against Canada is 'a dangerous bluff' and that some outside the country's borders are 'working to break us so they can own us', without naming the United States, while polls put support for breaking away at under a quarter of Albertans.
