Dirk Hanlon: Alberta votes Monday on starting to leave Canada; separatists say leaving saves forty-seven billion a year. Gus: Lorraine, we're moving to Alberta! Dot: Father, the province's own estimate is up to one hundred seventy billion. Gus: we'll move after the second referendum.
Before Monday's vote there are two sets of accounts for leaving Canada: Alberta's separatists say the province would save up to C$47 billion a year in federal taxes and run a surplus of C$24 billion to C$46 billion, while a report the provincial government itself commissioned puts the cost of leaving at C$50 billion to C$170 billion over five years, with Alberta's debt rising to as much as C$442 billion and its debt-to-GDP ratio from 7.7% to as high as 88.5%, and one think tank estimates Albertans' disposable income would fall 5.8%.
