Bigger Bill Than Budget

Oct 16, 2026 · 0:25

Tommy: Gartner says AI data centres need eight point five trillion. Dougie: I'll sell them revenue. Scarf: spending, three point six. Townsman: build more! Abe: over four trillion of assets at risk; eighty percent of neoclouds may not stay independent! Tommy: the build outruns the spending. Dougie: then I'll buy a neocloud, cheap.

Behind the slide in AI data-centre bonds is a gap Gartner has put a number on: data-centre owners need about $8,500 billion of revenue through the end of 2030 to cover their investment and financing, while AI spending by consumers and companies may reach at most $3,600 billion, leaving more than $4,000 billion of assets at risk of write-downs; Gartner forecasts that 80% of 'neocloud' providers could cease to operate independently by 2030, and in one week CoreWeave's shares fell 17%, Nebius 18% and Nvidia lost about $270 billion of market value.
